Van Bibber Creek Trail Crossing at Ward Road
LORIS lead the team for the design of this safe, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing trail crossing beneath Ward Road (State Highway 72). The project created a trail link between Van Bibber Park, a Jefferson County Open Space park, and an existing Van Bibber Creek trail (part of the existing City of Arvada trail system), and also provides a connection to the Wayne Lunn trail, which runs parallel to Ward Road. The project included considerations for multiple path users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians. As with many underpass projects, stormwater drainage and high groundwater was a primary design issue. The underpass storm drain and underdrain system was designed to manage both of these concerns without the aid of a sump pump. LORIS collaborated with the City of Arvada and Winston Associates to develop structure aesthetic details that blend well with the adjacent natural features while also incorporating an Arvada identity. The project was jointly funded with federal funds administered through CDOT, as well as Jefferson County Open Space and the City of Arvada, requiring extensive coordination and approval by all three entities.
