Meridian Elementary

Broomfield, Colorado

Christiansen Reece Architects

Located in McKay Landing within the City of Broomfield, Meridian Elementary School is a prototype school being added to the Adams Twelve Five Star portfolio. Newly adopted standards for design and development of educational facilities employ both architectural and site design elements that promote open, spacious designs. The concept creates learning environments that are economical, functional, attractive and stimulating.

Working in partnership with the City of Broomfield, the seven-acre school site design was integrally linked with an adjacent city park as a contribution to the local residents. This spirit of cooperation provides amenities for both students and the entire community, and is an example of the LORIS holistic design philosophy. The site has been designed to be fully ADA compliant, promoting pedestrian safety, circulation and access for adults and children.

This design was tailored to the individual needs of a site that was located on the uphill end of a large "island" surrounded by McKay Park Circle. The bus and parent drop-off loops were separated to promote safety and security for children commuting to and from the school. Site infrastructure was integrated with the overall McKay development that provided stormwater detention, utility services, pedestrian and vehicular circulation. The LORIS sustainable design approach created an infrastructure that is economical, low maintenance, compatible with the surrounding neighborhoods, and will serve the community for many years to come.
