Cemetery Lane
Aspen, Colorado

This project provided a safe, user friendly, and aesthetically pleasing multi-use path through the Cemetery Lane corridor in Aspen. Careful attention to minimize impact to trees and adjacent properties was an essential element of the design. In Phase 1, LORIS prepared a Design Concept Report for the project corridor that evaluated the cost and expected impacts of various path alignments, structure types and locations, and traffic calming features. The project was holistically designed to incorporate traffic calming features to improve the overall safety of the trail corridor. These features included chicanes, speed tables, and traffic monitor signs. This project also required innovative use of structures, retaining walls, and safety features to fit a multi-use path within a narrow right-of-way and difficult terrain. In addition to our close collaboration with the City of Aspen to assure that the project goals were being met, LORIS also participated in extensive public involvement as a project liaison for the Cemetery Lane Neighborhood Task Force.

For Phase 2 of the project, LORIS designed a multi-use path that connects the AABC Trail with the Rio Grande Trail in the City of Aspen. A combination of site structures and natural features were used to carry this trail through this challenging corridor. A 550-ft. long pedestrian bridge was designed to carry the trail through the most difficult segment. Boulder and mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls were also used. The project also required a 150-ft. span pedestrian bridge over the Roaring Fork River in Henry Stein Park. Intensive agency and public involvement was required, including coordination with the City of Aspen, Aspen Consolidated Sanitary District, Pitkin County, CDOT, Aspen Valley Land Trust and the Cemetery Lane Neighborhood Task Force.

The Cemetery Lane Trail was awarded a 2005 Design Honor Award for projects over $50,000 in construction cost by the Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Construction cost was approximately $2.8 million.
