Trails and Paths: Pedestrian Underpasses

Railroad Avenue Underpass
Loveland, Colorado

This underpass was required to complete an important link in the City of Loveland's trail system adjacent to the Big Thompson River. The underpass required modifications to the abutments of an existing city bridge, as well as approval by Burlington Northern Railroad. LORIS designed a floodwall to separate high flows from the trail. The walls are wider than required for strength so that they double as seat walls.

Because the underpass is several feet below the invert of the river, trench drains and slab underdrains were constructed to collect water. Rather than digging up several hundred feet of sensitive riverbed to construct a gravity outlet, a lift station was built to drain the manhole. With these measures, nuisance water and icing have never been problems.
