Trails and Paths: Pedestrian Underpasses
U.S. Highway 287 Underpass
Broomfield, Colorado
LORIS was the prime consultant, performing full service design for this rigid-frame underpass bridge on a state highway. The project objective was to connect two areas of Broomfield that were separated by the highway years ago. In order to meet this objective, we needed to create as wide-open and friendly an undercrossing as possible. Approaches were on a tangent so trail users could see through the underpass. Approach side slopes were laid back with landscaped tiers. A median skylight was designed to provide natural daylighting at the center of the structure. Aesthetics were added to give this streetscape a unique identity. The project also included plazas that provided connectivity to the adjacent park, bus stop, and shopping center. This project received the 1999 Public Works Project of the Year by the Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association.
Client: City of Broomfield
