Trails and Paths: Pedestrian Bridges

Vail Covered Bridge
Vail, Colorado

LORIS provided the engineering services for this historic landmark in the ski town of Vail, Colorado. Town crews constructed the bridge in the early 1960s using timber and a prestressed girder leftover from a local building project. By 1994, the popular bridge had developed six inches of sag. LORIS was commissioned by the town to investigate the structure. Through X-ray determination of reinforcing and finite element analysis of the structure, we concluded that the bridge's integrity was vulnerable and could become unsafe if subjected to full snow roof load plus floor live load. We were mandated to strengthen the structure without changing its appearance. Steel girders were used to support the exterior timber trusses and roof. The girders were designed with a low profile and then painted black so they were not visible from surrounding pedestrian areas. We also provided aesthetic lighting, stone veneer, and architectural railings.

Client:  Town of Vail
