Trails and Paths: Pedestrian Bridges
Washington Plaza
Golden, Colorado
The City of Golden wanted a bridge that would entice people to get people out of their cars and enjoy the surroundings at this amazing location along Clear Creek. This vehicular and pedestrian bridge crosses Clear Creek, forming a focal gateway to Golden's downtown. The "Miner's Tower" theme utilizes latticed towers from which stay cables support semi-circular shaped pedestrian plazas. The plazas, which vary in width from 10 - 22 feet, straddle the 44-ft. vehicular bridge. Creek side site features included an extension of the existing kayak course, bike trails, an amphitheater, MSE retaining walls, a slide and playground, and rockscaping patterns designed to attract people to the water. LORIS provided design services for this project as a subconsultant to TST, Inc. The construction cost was approximately $4.2 million, and the completed project earned three awards: 2003 Gold Hard Hat, Heavy/Highway, Silver (Colorado Construction News), 2003 American Public Works Association Community Award, and a 2004 ACEC Engineering Excellence Award.
