The Niwot Bed St John's Episcopal Church Addition St Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church |
Projects - Structures
St Mary Magdalene Studio Completiva St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church is located in the Heatherwood subdivision northeast of Boulder. The original building was constructed in a Santa Fe style of architecture with stucco finished walls and viga log roofs and porch areas. The architect maintained this theme with the new worship hall and education wing additions. The new worship hall is a one and a half story space with a radial viga log supported roof. LORIS designed the 16" diameter ponderosa pine viga logs to carry the roof loads; these are not log-wrapped sections. The tongue and groove roof decking spanned between these roof logs. The worship space walls contain a unique feature window, in the shape of a cross with 6" wide glazing. The window gives limited views of the Boulder Flatirons and brings a unique light quality into the space. The reinforced concrete masonry walls were designed with cantilevering bond beams and fully grouted cells to achieve this unique vision.
