Broadmoor Event Center
Colorado Springs, Colorado

Design of a new $38M, 550,000 ft 2 Events Center for the prestigious Broadmoor Hotel located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.   This multifaceted project includes 3 levels of below grade parking capable of parking 920+ cars, a 60,000 ft 2 events hall with a 250 psf floor live load, 8,300 ft 2 events kitchen, a 7,300 ft 2 Carriage House Museum, an 8,000 ft 2 gourmet restaurant, 23,000 ft 2 human resources office and an 8,000 ft 2 column free pre-function area.

The design of the structure was required to mesh with the luxurious reputation of the signature hotel which was accomplished by choosing materials and design solutions that complemented the architectural intent of the building.   The main events hall structure clear-spans 246 feet with seven custom steel trusses. Each truss is approximately 18½ feet deep at mid span and weighs more than 110,000 lbs. The below grade parking is constructed with precast concrete double tees for the parking decks and precast concrete walls around the perimeter of the parking garage. The superstructure of the office, museum, kitchen and restaurant areas is comprised of structural steel, composite concrete decking and steel bar joists framing the roof. Miscellaneous structures include cast in place concrete retaining walls at the lower level parking garage entrance and around various exterior grade level changes. The foundation system consists of cast in place walls around the perimeter of the building supported on drilled caissons with diameters up to 4 feet.

Precast concrete and shop fabricated steel trusses were designed to allow construction to move quickly and effectively through the erection process potentially resulting in a cost savings.
