Projects - Structures
Kent Denver Science Building Hutton Ford Architects LORIS provided full structural engineering services for the $4.4 million addition and renovation to Kent Denver's existing science building. The project included a new two-story steel framed wing addition to the existing science building, a two-story link structure from the science building to the main school building, and a one-and-a half story gallery space with astrometric lab tower entry feature. The gallery space is composed of varying geometry steel frames, with pin-jointed connections, laid out in a radial pattern. The ashometric entry tower is load-bearing CMU with a conical roof consisting of 12, 2 1/2" deep spokes that support a glass lens at the apex. The sun's rays focused by the lens, slicks the wall to the tower and acts as a clock and calendar. The winter solstice occurs at the top of the tower wall, the summer solstice occurs where the wall meets the floor. This is shown in the timelapse photograph. |
